Organizational psychologist Adam Grant noted that “unscheduled time isn’t wasted. It’s invested in well-being.” Yet, so many of us fret over wasted time in the workplace and at home. Some over helicopter their children to the point that their kids are over-scheduled, running from one thing to the other with no down or processing time. That can’t be good for one’s mental health.
Boredom can actually be a good thing. In this vein, Adam Grant also noted that a “full calendar brings a surplus of stress and shortage of energy.” I can attest to this from my personal experience. There are days where every hour of the day has an item to be done or a person to have a discussion with. By the time 5pm comes around, I need to collapse on the couch and stare blankly at the television. Then, after doing nothing for ten minutes, there is a sense of panic that time is being wasted. We all need to get out of considering nothingness as a waste. Stillness is, indeed, something. It’s recentering. It’s recalibrating. It’s rejuvenation. Or it can be if one let’s it be so.

I just read this out, in part, to my wife. Why in part? She said, humorously ‘I’m not listening……’. Then started to talk of her daily plan ahead. I laughed. Truth can be difficult to accept. 😊 All the best.

It is rare for something to only take as long as you think it will. I always like to leave some slack time. If I finish up quicker, I can use it to reward myself. If I don’t, I have avoided the stress of being behind schedule.
