I’m a sunny curmudgeon. A good blend of being a New Yorker who lived in California for ten years. I like things done in a New York minute but I also have patience. I try to be kind to and have empathy for all. Well, for as many I come across and have enough emotional bandwidth for. I’m a New Yorker and not naive. I know not everyone will be kind in return. However, I always try to not carry hate in my heart. It’s what I teach my son as well.
That’s what I preach. Then there are those people who are the exact opposite of that R.E.M song “shiny happy people.” There are those people who are utterly miserable and want others to be as well. They seem to go out of their way to bring misery. What is even more disturbing is that those people are often surrounded by misery enablers. Those people are even worse. They see the evil and push it, propel it forward.
My big question these days is how can one survive those miserable people?

Overcome evil with good. Those who need kindness often least deserve it. Be kind anyway. Be the better person and eventually they might come around…and if they don’t it’s not because you didn’t try.

I remember when you were first moving to California! It’s been a while. I think the easiest way to survive miserable people is to find our joy – the places and the people we enjoy, and focus on them. I sometimes become obsessed with who has done what though, and why I don’t like it. And then I feel very grumpy.

Omg. Hi!!! How have you been?
Yes, agreed we do have to find our joy. I’m that to be true more and more each day.
Hope things are well

Depends on whether they have any power over you, real or granted by, say, family ties.
Be kind when you can.
Associate as little as possible with the really recalcitrant ones.
Get out from under if they have power.
We share a world with them; we don’t have to share a life.

I don’t know – I just try to stay away from them.

If equality is your objective it is much easier to make everyone miserable than to make everyone happy.

Miserable people are like vampires. They suck out our energy. Avoid them whenever possible and hold on to your positive energy if you cannot avoid them.
