Awards

You have to fight for your dream and joy

I like movies. Actually, I have always loved movies. Popular culture helped me growing up. I won’t go into it, but trust me television, music, and film can have an impact on a girl’s life. Till this day, despite it’s length and controversies, I love watching the Oscars. The glam, the glitz, and the giddiness are all fun spectacles.

This year I was ready for the award show being that I made a point to watch many of the movies last year. I was excited to watch because my opinion would be informed. But let’s be real who cares about an informed opinion when it comes to movies? That is what is great about the movies. It’s what you feel.

You know what else I like about the Oscars? I love the dreams that come true. I love hearing of a person’s journey and their mentors. Lady Gaga noted that you have to fight for your dream and keep getting up. Many of us have been knocked down repeatedly but we find a way to get back up and try again and again. It was so much fun watching Spike Lee be ecstatic as he ran onstage to accept his first Academy Award. He is often so serious that seeing him overly happy made people happy. And what about the pure joy exhibited by Jaime Ray Newman for Skin?

At the end of the day, the advice given in the speeches are not anything new. But it’s nice to remember everyone has an origin story and we are constantly writing our own.

And by the way, I just loved all the pink dresses on the red carpet. The colors were bold. They were fun.

  1. I love movies, too. But lately, the political discourse exhibited at the awards shows are annoying. Knowing too much about the actors takes away from the dreams that they create on the silver screen.
