Culture

And now you’re telling me it’s not clumsiness

Apparently, somewhere in Spain, a physicist woke up and chose chaos. How so? By proving that humans, across cultures, ages, and continents, cannot for the life of us walk in a straight line. We drift left. Universally. Our feet drift left. Like some subtle, collective lean toward mischief or meaning or the nearest espresso.

This is both deeply scientific and profoundly validating. Because I have spent years ricocheting off walls, grazing chairs, and subtly sideswiping doorframes like a Roomba with unresolved emotional issues. And now you’re telling me it’s not clumsiness. It’s physics? It’s global? Honestly, I feel seen.

Maybe my body isn’t malfunctioning. Maybe it’s overcorrecting. Maybe somewhere deep in my neurological wiring, there’s a tiny, overachieving physicist whispering, “Not too straight, we don’t trust straight lines,” and nudging me gently. Yet repeatedly into furniture.

This feels fine.

  1. Be careful. Since I turned 74 a year ago, I’ve had a few falls that were not too damaging thankfully. Be very careful about falls by keeping your leg strength up and walking a lot too.
