Like all Politics, Porn Searches Are Local

Someone once said, followed by a hundred and one more, that all politics is local. Truer words have not been uttered. For instance, no way a Jessie Ventura, former WWF persona, gets elected outside of Minnesota.  No shade on Minnesota, ok? I’m just saying he ran on a very grassroots campaign that urged Minnesotans to not vote for politics as usual. And boy, did they agree and vote accordingly.  And by the way, before I move on to the porn topic at hand, I should note it was former House Speaker Tip O’Neill who famously first uttered that line.  No ulterior motive just disseminating information.

Infographics are all the rage nowadays. As someone who deals in statistics and writes reports, I can see the utility of an infographic to convey key results. The graphics can be attention grabbing and focus the audience on the take-home message at hand. It breaks down data to a key level of applicability that is easy to digest by the general public. You know how many individuals argue that data lies (which we know it doesn’t as it is people that lie)?  Well, infographics makes it hard to say that data lies. The visuals take on a whole different set of psychological attributes and the data can be accepted more readily or easily.  Such a trend in information dissemination must be giving some hard-core academics seizures of epic proportions as they often like charts that have Rs, betas and confidence intervals so that you ignore their all-too-close to .05 P value. You know that academics they kind of use their charts as fluffers. Total pun intended. Have I crossed a line yet?

Just this past week I was riveted by a new set of survey research data that was released. Specifically, an infographic was released pertaining to online porn searches in the United States. Just as baseline information, note that internet pornography use has increased over the past 10 years (Short et.al, 2012). Furthermore, the US regions were divided by the researchers into 5: northeast, southeast, west, southwest, and midwest.

Lo and behold, porn searches are regionalized. Porn searches are local! And, the manner in which they occur does not surprise me. First off, more time is spent on porn sites in the southeast, southwest and west. It makes total sense that if you live in Mississippi or Alabama (very rural places) you would have to seek out and visit porn sites. In the southeast region is bible belt country it is hard enough as it is to get a good cocktail on a Sunday afternoon.  As for the southwest, well everyone knows everything is bigger in Texas. Have I crossed any lines yet? As for the west, isn’t that where most porn is produced in the united States? I am, therefore, assuming that individuals in the west spend so much time on porn sites as part of quality assurance efforts. We must take pride in our products. It is the American way to lust for grandness.  Furthermore, there are a large number of hotels in the west and past research and investigative reports (CBS news, 2003) have shown that that 50% of guests at major hotel chains have purchased adult movies, contributing to 70% of in-room profits.  Do you remember a few years back when Cameron Diaz, ultimate California girl, noted “I love porn! You know what I love about hotels? How discreet they are. They always give you that little thing at the bottom, Your room will be charged the same as any other room. No titles will be used.I think her quote captures the essence of the availability of porn at hotels.

Next up in said infographic, we get to see what are the top porn search terms by region. The phrase MILF was in the top three searches for three of the five US regions. If you know what the phrase means, great! If not, google it. All I have to say about that phrase, is that I myself learned of it four years ago when I became a mom. And, it is an odd phrase in that I do not quite get why it needs to exist. But, perhaps that is a topic for another time. I do note that the term, perhaps not explicitly laid out as such, has been around for a long time. Have you ever heard of the quote “Mrs. Robinson, you are trying to seduce me…” That movie too old for ya? How about “stifler’s mom” in American Pie?  Do you get that reference? In the early 2000s, the state of Washington allowed (for a short period of time) vanity license plates that said “GOTMILF”, as a parody of the Got Milk campaign. So, again, I go back to my lack of understanding as to why the term needs to exist. Are moms such an exotic entity?

Anyway, back to the infographic at hand. The southeast and the midwest had the same top three porn searches, although in slightly different order. Two of the three were MILF and teen. I’m not going near the third extremely popular term for I have a feeling many of you will know it. Those of you that don’t will learn something new by visiting the infographic. Although, I will note it is a relatively new porn term entry that came about in the early 2000s. I sort of feel that Bill Clinton led to the ushering in of that phrase.

I am intrigued by the fact that top searches for the southwest and the northeast are compilations. Plus, college was another top term for the northeast. Which makes sense considering that you have the majority of the Ivy League schools in the northeast. I bet that in those videos girls that wear glasses do get passes…Oh, I know that is very old school. I couldn’t help myself.

So, there you have it. The beauty of infographics. They are great to use in your presentations, and articles. Maybe, you can even do an improvisational infographic dance. With the advent of social media, where visuals and decreased text are becoming the norm in day-to-day communications, infographics help further the ease of data understanding and integration. Infographics serve to localize the data and make it more personal. If you want people to understand, value and utilize data it has to be relatable. All politics, porn, food and shoe wear are local. Understanding that, will generally get you far in life (and  in a quest for power should you be on that path).
