I recently learned about Rick Charls, who in 1983 was one of five divers to successfully dive from a completely reasonable 172-foot platform at SeaWorld San Diego. You know, just casually throwing yourself off a building into a pool. His dive was particularly impressive for its difficulty and execution. Apparently, there was a special technique involved. I’m not entirely sure what it was, but I’m guessing it included the words focus, precision, and what the hell am I doing?
There is something inspiring about committing yourself to accomplishing a feat that most people would look at and say, “Absolutely not.”
I will probably never break a world record. I have no plans to dive 172 feet into anything, including a swimming pool, a pile of money, or an exceptionally good cheesecake.
But I do have my own records.
I keep trying to improve my self-insight. I’m working on maximizing my time instead of merely filling it. I’m striving to catch the sunrise, because there is something about seeing a new day begin that makes me believe, at least temporarily, that things are going to be okay.
And then there is cheese consumption.
I jest.
Maybe.
The point is, perhaps our personal records don’t have to be spectacular enough for Guinness. Maybe they are the small things we keep working on such as becoming a little wiser, using our time a little better, noticing the sunrise, laughing more, recovering faster, and occasionally eating an irresponsible amount of cheese.
We don’t all need to jump from 172 feet.
Sometimes the record worth breaking is our own.
