I’ve been feeling nostalgic lately, which is dangerous because nostalgia has a way of making absolutely ordinary things from childhood seem magical.
Today I saw a kid who looked about seven or eight years old carrying a shiny new iPad, and it sent me straight back to elementary school.
Back then, a new folder could make my entire week.
A folder with a glossy finish? Jackpot.
Multicolored pens? Forget it. I had arrived.
There was something intoxicating about school supplies when you were a kid. A fresh notebook, a perfectly sharpened pencil, a pen in a color you had never seen before. It was basically winning the lottery. Except the lottery was available at the stationery aisle of the local store.
Times have changed.
Apparently, children now get iPads.
We got three-ring binders and felt rich.
Which brings me to the Powerball, currently sitting there looking mighty tempting.
Maybe nostalgia has convinced me that I should buy a ticket and finally experience the adult version of the shiny folder.
Although, realistically, my odds are terrible.
So perhaps I’ll stick with my fancy blue fine-tip gel pens.
They write beautifully.
And unlike the lottery, I know exactly where I can buy another one.

Wishing all school children (and their teachers) had nothing more important to look forward to than using those new supplies to learn about their world and themselves.
