- “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.β
When I became pregnant I knew that one of the values I would immediately try to pass onto my child was the love and appreciation of travel. In psychology, we measure openness to new ideas. As a matter of fact it is one of the big five personality traits (OCEAN).
Openness is about curiosity. And, my mother instilled that in me at a very young age and in part is what has led to my success. Thus, I wanted to pass on that value onto my son.
Traveling is one way of showing and engaging curiosity. Of course, there are those who travel and never want to experience the local flavor. But, a grand number of travelers are curious.
For my son’s first birthday we went to Atlanta, combining it with a business trip where I had to give a presentation on my work. The best part of that trip was the aquarium, which is grand. Since then we often try to visit aquariums on our trips both domestic and abroad.
Traveling opens up your mind, if you allow it to. And, once you have experienced openness and curiosity it’s hard to go back.
Hopefully, this pandemic can abate. We get our vaccine passports and go back on the road.

Mimi, this is lovely. I love your quote, βA mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.β In education there was a study that showed that families that traveled with their children actually improved their ability to learn. In an equity training, we lined up adults and asked them questions, and they stepped forward every time they answered yes. One of the questions pertained to traveling as kids. Travel with your children does expand their minds! Thank you so much for participating this week.

Interesting findings around travel that don’t surprise me. Of course travel is a privilege and we must try to find ways to make it available even in small or imaginary ways
