In today’s episode of “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up,” a gang of thieves in California has been arrested for the great avocado heist of 2024. Yes, you heard that right—avocados. Apparently, the allure of creamy green goodness was just too much for these desperados to resist.
Picture this: A moonlit night, a quiet avocado grove, and a band of masked bandits tiptoeing through the trees. Their target? The prized Hass avocados destined for guacamole glory. The plan was foolproof—until it wasn’t. It turns out that stealing avocados is a lot harder than it looks. Who knew?
The local sheriff described the scene as “something out of a cartoon.” The thieves were caught red-handed, or should I say green-handed, trying to make their getaway with a truckload of avocados. They were apprehended after a low-speed chase that ended in a ditch, with avocados rolling everywhere.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: Why avocados? Well, it turns out that avocados are worth their weight in gold these days. The price of avocados has skyrocketed, and these thieves thought they could cash in on the green rush. Little did they know, their dreams of a guacamole empire would be squashed—pun intended.
This whole saga got me thinking about the lengths people will go to for their favorite foods. We live in a world where avocado toast is practically a religion, and guac is a non-negotiable side dish. But stealing avocados? That’s taking food obsession to a whole new level.
So, let’s take a moment to appreciate the absurdity of it all. In a week full of bites, bites, and more bites, at least we can chuckle at the thought of avocado bandits trying to make their mark. Here’s to hoping for a week filled with laughter, levity, and maybe a little less criminal produce activity.

We were recently in Michoacán, Mexico where the cartel are involved in the avocado industry, so strange as it is, I believe it 🙂 Maggie

While I certainly don’t endorse the criminal behavior, I kinda can’t help respecting their priorities…

I believe it. I just don’t care – I hate avocados, and everything made out of them, and how they show up where they never were before in food (if you don’t like something, this is like noticing OTHER pregnant women seem to be everywhere when you are).
I grew up in Mexico from 7 on – someone must have tried to force me to eat it (like my grandmothers did with the horrible gushy acid tomatoes she forced me to eat at around the same age). And chiles – everyone must have thought it was cute to make the little American girl cry… And the ones who made fun because she didn’t speak Spanish and tricked her with bad jokes…
Note to parents: if you change your small child’s environment by a LOT, keep the rest as familiar as you possibly can – stability as you’re mastering the world is a big thing.

There are some ‘grownups’ who really aren’t, and kids are not always able to escape them.
It just takes a couple of bad apples in the bunch to make a kid skittish. I’m fine now, and was careful not to pass it on.
