How would you improve your community?
If you were a fan of the television series Mad Men and caught the series finale you would have heard a folksy, yet very commercial song from the early ’70s that on occassion, I find myself singing out loud. What song?
“I’d like to teach the world to sing (in perfect harmony).” It’s a catchy tune that invokes peaceful, harmonious thoughts while drinking a can of Coca-Cola. You have to laugh at that. Personally, I have to admit to liking (loving) Coke Zero. I drink it first thing in the morning. Often, even before coffee. I keep thinking that they should hire me as a spokesperson, but I also know I don’t necessarily care to be the Coca-Cola girl.
But I digress.
Here’s the deal. Singing, as a community intervention, may seem hokey. However, often when you get people to sing together- whether it’s the National Anthem at a baseball stadium or It’s Raining Men at a club- differences take a back seat. The love of the song. The beat of the melody. The moving lyrics. They can all bring people together. And, can bring people together in a fun way that allows people to feel an authentic moment and emotion.
I’d like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees and snow-white turtle doves
I’d like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I’d like to hold it in my arms and keep it company
So, sing a song. Sing out loud. Sing out strong. Bring others into the fold.

Used to take my guitar into the Day Hospital from time to time. Day Hospital was an extension programme in the hospital for discharged patients to come back once a week for a few months. That way the nurse running it could ensure ongoing ‘back home’ success and monitor vital signs, well being, etc. Anyways, music? I used to have this song alongside loads more. Dementia patients, in particular, loved music and the singalongs. Your so right in what you say here. Great post. All the best.

I love the energy of this post! 🎉
I stopped drinking Coca Cola since it makes my heartbeat quicker. But I see why you like it; it’s difficult to dispute.
With each random act of kindness, I try my best to enhance the community around me. It’s not much, but a smile here, a helping hand there, and some sound advice may go a long way. It is essential to remember to be the smile of God whenever possible.
Have a great weekend, Mimi! 🙂 🌷
