Trying to be rooted but the delivery times failed me

I have lived in a lot of places. That’s an understatement. I am now in my second apartment in the same building I moved in exactly a year ago. It’s been about a month that I have lived in my current apartment. In the past, I was very quick to outfit my new apartment. I get settled in very quickly, typically. However, this time around I have been very slow to pull the trigger on fully furnishing my place.

Have you heard of the song “No Roots”? Some of the key lyrics include:

“I build a home and wait for someone to tear it down
Then pack it up in boxes, head for the next town running
‘Cause I’ve got memories and travel like gypsies in the night…”

Sometimes I have been rootless. And, I’ve been meaning to change that this time around. However, I’ve been indecisive. I finally ordered two pieces of furniture through Wayfair. I was excited to have finally gotten my act somewhat together.

I ordered a tree hallway piece. Right as you come in you come across this piece that welcomes you home. Stores my shoes, keys, and random items. It’s welcoming and also sends one on one’s way. I also ordered a furniture piece for my bedroom. That piece was never delivered. They didn’t even bother to tell me it was on back order till January 2021. Really? Am I expected to wait till then? Who knows what else is coming?

I sat in my bedroom and laughed. I tried to get rooted but forces beyond me conspired against me.

  1. We’ve been in this apartment since February 2019 and haven’t finished moving in. And it’s our ‘forever home,’ because we have bought into this retirement community that has all higher levels of care – Memory Support, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing – downstairs.

I was being patient with my husband’s paper sorting, not getting the help I need to do things because he wasn’t finished. Well, he still isn’t, and I can’t get help because no non-essential people are allowed in during a pandemic.

MY office is tidy, mostly, and my desk is clear. The rest, it will just have to wait. I ignore it because I can’t change it.

    Not normal times, these.

  2. I like that piece of that furniture. I ordered something from Lowes – it was stolen off of my doorstep – I contacted Lowes and they never replied, but a new tall fan appeared several weeks later. I just don’t like the wat companies act like they are doing the customers favors – when did this mondset occur?
