He hadn’t been out for a run in a long time. He long ago stopped caring about everything including his fitness and health. What did it all matter, anyway, he thought. Nothing was going to stop the inevitable. Maybe he was too cavelier about everything but no one gave him anything to care for. To fight for. Everyone had let him down in one way or another. It wasn’t anyone’s fault. That was just how it was. We are all meant to be disappointed by others.
Today, though. Today was different.

He was going to dust off those running shoes and eat the cobwebs for good measure. His people needed him.
He finished the cobwebs, laced up his sneakers and put his mask on. He looked up to the sky and ran out the door like he has never run before. He ran towards the screams and desperate cries for help. Heroes never die.

Nice one. I have been fascinated by the responses to this photo challenge. I did not see the end coming in yours and yes, I did have a sharp intake of breath when I read it.
