Somewhere in Florida, a woman was heading home from a Halloween party at 4 a.m. dressed as a banana when she witnessed a car crash.
Naturally, she did the responsible thing and called the police.
And just like that, she became an internet sensation. A banana hero, if you will.
I love this story for several reasons. First, Florida continues to be Florida. Second, it is a reminder that you never know when you might find yourself in a situation requiring you to be a functioning adult while dressed like a piece of fruit.
Psychologically speaking, we spend so much time worrying about how other people perceive us. We curate our images, rehearse conversations, agonize over what to wear, and occasionally lie awake at 2 a.m. remembering something embarrassing we said in 1997.
Meanwhile, this woman is demonstrating civic responsibility in a banana suit.
Perhaps there’s a lesson here. You can be ridiculous and responsible. You can look absurd and still do the right thing. You can be the person everyone is laughing at and the person everyone should be thanking.
And honestly, if we’re going to have a public image crisis, I’d rather mine involve a banana costume than my search history.
As October winds down, Halloween approaches, and we prepare to spend money on candy for children who may or may not even say thank you, let’s remember that adulthood is weird enough without taking ourselves too seriously.
Be kind. Help when you can. Wear the ridiculous costume.
And if life throws you a curveball, remember that someone out there handled an emergency dressed as a banana.
You’ve got this.
You don’t have to look like you have your life together to actually have your life together. Although a little potassium never hurts.
