There is apparently some government investigation called Operation Ghostbusters. I don’t know much about it, but I do know that the name has now taken on a whole new life in my head.
I was lying on an ultrasound table recently, when the technician’s Spotify playlist decided to provide the soundtrack. And suddenly, there it was.
🎶 Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters! 🎶
I started laughing. Because really, what an absolutely ridiculous song to be singing along to while someone is scanning your abdomen.
But here’s what got me thinking. How on earth did this song have such staying power?
It’s catchy. It’s got a fun melody. It’s practically impossible not to sing along once you hear those opening notes. But it’s also a song written for a very specific movie that came out in 1984. That’s more than 40 years ago! It should theoretically have been relegated to the musical archives alongside other cinematic relics.
And yet, every Halloween, it rises from the dead. (Pun absolutely intended.)
Maybe that’s the secret. Some songs don’t need to be timeless masterpieces. They just need three memorable notes, a ridiculously catchy chorus, and a movie that refuses to leave the cultural conversation.
Or maybe we just need something silly to sing when life gets a little too serious.
Either way, I now know that if someone announces a government investigation called Operation Ghostbusters, my first instinct is apparently going to be to laugh and start singing.
I’m not sure that’s what the investigators had in mind.
But hey… Who ya gonna call?
