Truth, Now Moving

For some people, the truth is not a fixed point. It’s a moving target.

Today it’s over here. Tomorrow it’s somewhere across town. By Thursday, apparently, it was never there at all.

And if you happen to live, work, love, or otherwise orbit someone with this particular relationship to reality, eventually you start spinning. You question what you heard, what you saw, what happened, and occasionally whether you have developed early-onset dementia.

I think people with an especially untethered relationship to truth should be required to wear some sort of warning light. Perhaps a small flashing beacon on their forehead. Maybe a vest that says:

CAUTION: FACTS MAY SHIFT WITHOUT NOTICE!

Because the problem isn’t merely that their version of reality changes. It’s that everyone else in their orbit gets motion sickness trying to keep up.

There is something profoundly exhausting about chasing a truth that refuses to stand still.

So perhaps the lesson is this. When someone’s truth keeps moving, stop moving with it.

Plant your feet. Trust your own memory. Check the facts. And for the love of psychology, bring Dramamine.
