What makes a good leader?
Today marks the birthday of the one and only Dolly Parton, and as I think about her legacy, I can’t help but smile. My mom absolutely adored Dolly, and I grew up hearing her songs, seeing her sparkle, and feeling inspired by her unapologetic approach to life. You have to be brave to rock those rhinestones unapologetically, right? But Dolly wasn’t just about the glitz and glam. She’s full of wisdom—wisdom that has shaped not just the music world, but how many of us approach life.
One of my favorite Dolly quotes is, “You’ll never do a whole lot unless you’re brave enough to try.” And, is that ever so true. Bravery has always been in my DNA. From growing up in the Bronx to leading organizations that serve the needy, bravery has been a constant companion, though it hasn’t always been an easy one. I’ve had hard decisions to make, daring steps to take, and moments where I’ve had to remind myself: you won’t get anywhere without action.
Dolly’s perspective on life resonates with me in so many ways. There are times in life when you look at the road you’re on and realize it’s not working. But instead of giving up, you do what Dolly suggests: “If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving another one.” There’s so much power in that. It’s about taking control of your journey. I’ve paved a few roads of my own as a leader, often because the well-trodden path just wasn’t leading to where I wanted or needed to go.
And it’s not just about the advice, either. Dolly’s philanthropic efforts are truly inspiring—her work to get books into the hands of kids through her Imagination Library is a perfect example of using your platform for good. I can relate to that deeply. Helping people find inspiration and possibilities, giving them the tools to build their own paths, is something I strive for every day in my work. We all need that spark, that book, that opportunity to see beyond our current circumstances and dream a little bigger.
So here’s to Dolly—a woman who knows how to live, give, and inspire. She’s a reminder that bravery and leadership isn’t just about facing fears; it’s about trying, failing, and trying again. And when the road you’re on isn’t cutting it, grab that shovel and start paving another one. Happy birthday, Dolly—you’re a treasure.
