What is a word you feel that too many people use?
Every year, there are a few words that just get overused to the point that they are meaningless, have lost their oomph, or are a conversation ender. We went from “on fleek” to “OK, boomer” to “woke.” We’ve overused “cancel” and “bye Felicia.” Sadly, I must admit I still use “word” and “dude.” I may be a New Yorker, but I spent a decade in California. Some things stuck.
In the past, I have written about how I hate how people use the phrase “no problem” instead of saying you’re welcome. Now, we instead say, “No worries.” Even if it’s an inconvenience, I’m going to say you’re welcome. Well, most of the time. I must admit to also saying, “No worries.”
Etiquette- ever evolving. But what do these new phrases say about our collective consciousness?
Now, we also have the overuse of the word “weaponization.” It’s like we’re in a constant combat zone. Everything and everyone is being weaponized, including petting a dog. Seriously!
My, oh my. What will be the next word to be overused? I feel like I can safely bet it will somehow be related to all the court cases we will be monitoring this coming year.

Few things irritate me more than redefining a word to mean whatever you want at the moment. Turning a useful word with a standard definition into an epithet meaning nothing but personal displeasure.
Explaining in a high school AP psychology class that there are sexual lifestyles other then cis-het orthodoxy suddenly turns into “grooming.”
“Addiction” becomes anything I refuse to stop doing because someone else doesn’t like it. Or anything I know I ought to stop but can’t be bothered to make the effort.
“Gaslighting” becomes anytime you tell me something I don’t want to hear.
Orwell believed that you could control a population by controlling language. He may be right. Certainly various interest groups are putting in the effort.
