I recently was featured in an interview for an on-line serious advocacy piece. I was grateful for such a feature where they asked me about my work and how I got to where I am at. Based on that interview I have been invited for other key note events. Not bad for a small town girl like myself. Well, I grew up in New York City. However, I feel like a small town girl. Ok. No, I don’t really. I admit I didn’t cook for Thanksgiving and actually ordered a pre-made dinner. I suppose that is not what a small-town girl does. Its what a lazy girl who lives in a city does. Anyway, I digress. But in this instance I am allowed to digress as I am doing an interview with myself. Yes, that’s right. I thought my serious interview needed a follow-up. But alas no media outlet has asked. The Entertainment Weekly Magazine does interviews all the time and I have randomly picked one of theirs to interview myself with.
The book I read in secret as a kid.
I honestly don’t believe that there was a book I read in secret. My mother would go the library each week and take out 8-10 books for me. And they ran the gamut in terms of genre. I had no reason to do read anything in secret. Or at least none that my conscious mind can come up with.
The TV shows I’ve watched over and over.
This is the easiest question for me to answer and am glad to have been asked. I have watched every episode of Gilmore Girls and Buffy the Vampire Slayer at least 4 times. Two completely genres of television, yet both speak to me at my core.
The book that cemented me as a writer.
I wouldn’t say that I am a writer. But most definitely Hunger of Memory is a book that made me want to write about my life. Then I read Random Family and I knew I had to write about my life. I read them both at very different points in my life. Yet both were transition times where I felt the need for change in my life every if I didn’t know from where the change would come.
The last book that made me cry.
Hmm. Can’t recall crying at a book. I more readily cry at television shows.
The fictional character I’d want on my side in a zombie apocalypse.
No doubt I would want Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Faith is bad-ass and waive ring moral compass. That’;s what your need in an apocalypse.
The classic I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never read.
That is actually a long list but at the moment I can only remember not reading “Of Mice and Men.”
The TV show that’s my favorite guilty pleasure
Oh my. I’m ok being low-brow and thus most would not be guilty pleasures. Which though is the guiltiest one? I do like that show Younger. It stretches credulity, though and for that reason it is a bit of a guilty pleasure.
The first album I bought with my own money
I honestly couldn’t tell you. I think the first albums I bought were under that but 6 for 99 cents special. I have no idea what those were. Maybe Madonna?
The fictional place I dream of moving to.
I would like to say Stars Hollow. But here is a guilty pleasure. Truthfully I always wanted to live in Cabot Cove (where Murder she wrote took place). That is slightly embarrassing but I always wanted to live in a town on the coast where everyone knows each other and where there is for some reason a lot of murders.
My favorite movie
Hmm. Silience of the Lambs set me for life. I watch Dirty Dancing at least once every two months or so. But those are for campy reasons. A truly good film: Blade Runner.
The last album I listened to?
Do people listen to whole albums anymore? I don’t. I haven’t in a decade.
The song people might be surprised to know I know all the words to.
Well, I should state right off the bat that I butcher song lyrics. I might think I know all the words. That doesn’t mean that in actuality I know the words. Second, most of the songs I know the full lyrics of are of the southern rock genre. I think most people that knows me would be surprised by that.
What I’m reading now
Brown is the New White. Or at least I am trying to read that book.

This was interesting. By the way, my brother, Doug Jones, played the lead gentleman on that episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Also, I must mention that I still listen to whole albums. When properly constructed, they TAKE you somewhere. I first noticed this with Abbey Road. Later on, Tea for the Tillerman did the trick.

No way. I would have given anything to be in a Buffy episode and especially the hush one.
hmm. I have to see if I even have whole albums. I think the last one i got was the Beastie Boys last album

I used to love reading liner explanations and lyrics, seeing who played what instruments, and looking at the cover and interior art… all while listening to the different parts through the headphones. It was my version of a multimedia experience.

Pretty sure the first album I purchased was The Beatles’ Rubber Soul. Does that date me or what?
