Take the Cars Out of the Streets

What’s one thing that would instantly improve your city?

I have a modest proposal for improving New York City.

Flying cars.

Hear me out.

The problem with New York isn’t really transportation. It’s that we have all agreed to cram cars, buses, bicycles, scooters, pedestrians, delivery trucks, double-parked vehicles and one guy inexplicably pushing a refrigerator down the street into the same tiny horizontal space.

Why are we doing this?

Put the cars in the sky.

Imagine being able to walk through Manhattan without constantly calculating whether that taxi is going to turn, whether the delivery truck sees you, or whether someone on an electric scooter has decided traffic laws are merely suggestions.

I could speed-walk through the city with the confidence of a woman who knows absolutely nothing is going to suddenly appear from a side street and attempt to kill her.

And why stop at flying cars?

Flying bicycles.

Although this is where my utopian transportation plan begins to develop some holes.

Because I have concerns about cars crashing into one another above us.

We already have enough problems on the ground. I don’t particularly want to be walking down Fifth Avenue when two automated Teslas have a disagreement at 1,200 feet and someone else’s Uber falls out of the sky.

So perhaps flying cars should be automated.

No human driving.

No texting.

No road rage.

No guy who has been driving for 47 years insisting he “knows what he’s doing.”

Just computers calmly navigating the skies while we walk below, blissfully unflattened.

Of course, knowing New York, we’d eventually have traffic.

Air traffic.

There would be a flying-car gridlock over Midtown, someone would double-park in the sky, and a guy from Queens would yell, “HEY! YOU CAN’T PARK THERE!”

At which point we’d know technology had finally achieved its ultimate goal.

Recreating New York City.

Just vertically.
