We’ve been sold a very polished lie. That life is something you prepare for.
Save now. Work harder. Wait your turn. Delay gratification like it’s a moral virtue and not a slow leak of joy. As if pleasure is a reward you earn later, after you’ve checked every box, climbed every ladder, optimized every waking second.
Experts will tell you the brain gets hooked on the chase. Hooked on wanting, planning, and anticipating. Dopamine loves a good “coming soon.” But here’s the problem. We get so good at wanting that we forget how to have.
We live in previews.
Meanwhile, the actual movie (meaning your life)is quietly playing without you.
I’ve never been good at rushing pleasure. Ask anyone who’s ever eaten with me. I am, without question, the slowest eater alive. Tiny bites. Long pauses. Full attention. It’s borderline theatrical. But I’m not stalling. I’m savoring. I want the texture, the flavor, the moment. I want to be there for it.
Life, I’ve decided, should be a series of tapas.
Not just food. But everything. Small tastes. A sampling. Try this. Try that. Linger here. Skip that. Maybe you love ten different things. Maybe you only love two. But you won’t know if you keep saving everything for some mythical “later” version of you who is less busy, less tired, more deserving.
Spoiler. She never arrives.
So yes, plan. Be responsible. Save for the future.
But also order the dessert. Take the long way. Stay at the table a little longer. Say yes to the tiny, delicious detours.
Because a life built entirely on delayed gratification eventually forgets how to feel like living.
And what a waste that would be.
