There’s nothing funny about a shark with a cavity

What is your favorite animal?

Sharks. Those glamorous, fin-flipping divas of the deep. The rulers of the ocean. The creatures who make every beachgoer reconsider their life choices at the mere sight of a dorsal fin. And what’s their secret weapon? Teeth. Lots of teeth. Teeth that grow back like it’s nobody’s business. Fearsome, terrifying, cinematic teeth.

But, brace yourself. Scientists are waving a little red flag. The ocean’s getting more acidic. And those teeth? They might get structurally weaker. Break more easily. Suddenly, the sharks’ legendary bite could go from “apocalyptic Jaws-style terror” to “ouch, that nibbled me a little.”

Can you imagine? Fluoride treatments for sharks. Twice-yearly dental check-ups. Flossing lessons for a great white. Maybe a Shark Invisalign trend emerges “Get your bite back, darling, it’s crucial for top predator credibility!”

Here’s the existential crisis. If sharks lose their fearsome chomp, what happens to the top of the ocean’s food chain? Do dolphins suddenly start doing synchronized swimming while sharks sip kelp smoothies? Does Sharknado become a reality TV competition instead of a terror franchise? Are we no longer scared of “Jaws” and instead anxiously awaiting “Shark with Braces: The Revenge”?

Part of me is relieved. Fewer sharp teeth, fewer shark attacks, fewer dramatic beach escapes. But the other part? I mourn the mythos. The terror. The pure, unadulterated fear that makes popcorn taste better during a summer blockbuster.

So here’s the takeaway. Be kind to the ocean, or someday our nightmares will star slightly embarrassed sharks. And trust me, there’s nothing funny about a shark with a cavity. I think. But who knows…
