It’s that special time of year—one filled with twinkling lights, family traditions, and way too many sugar cookies. But in our home, we’re not just decked out for Christmas. Nope, we’re doubling the festive spirit because it’s Chrismukkah! This year is extra magical, too, because Hanukkah actually falls on Christmas Day—a rare occurrence that’s only happened five times since 1900. How’s that for holiday alignment?
As a blended family, we’re lucky to celebrate the best of both worlds. My son gets to experience both the warm, cozy glow of the Christmas tree and the meaningful lighting of the menorah. It’s not just about the presents (though, let’s be real, he doesn’t mind the extra gifts); it’s about learning to appreciate the richness of multiple traditions and the value of togetherness. He’s growing up in a world where he doesn’t have to choose one or the other—he gets to embrace both.
Chrismukkah in our home means we get to indulge in all the holiday clichés but with a little twist. We’ll be spinning dreidels while sipping eggnog, and our latkes come with a side of Christmas ham (or at least a wink of humor). We’ve got a menorah on the mantel right next to the stockings, and Santa definitely doesn’t mind sharing his milk and cookies with a few sufganiyot.
What I love most about Chrismukkah isn’t just the food (though, trust me, that helps) but the way it teaches our son that holidays—and life—aren’t about fitting into neat little boxes. It’s about blending, mixing, and finding joy in the overlap. Celebrating both Hanukkah and Christmas reminds us that family, love, and light come in many forms.
So, this December 25th, we’ll be counting our blessings—eight and then some—because we know how lucky we are to have these traditions. Chrismukkah may only come once in a while, but in our home, the spirit of togetherness it brings will last all year long.
