Healing is a journey, not a race

Fridays are typically a beacon of respite, but today’s headlines were a mixed bag. Amidst the global chaos, a story about record-breaking heatwaves stood out. As I read about sweltering temperatures wreaking havoc across continents, I couldn’t help but think about my own summer plans—still on hold due to my knee.

This morning started with the usual grind, only to be interrupted by a physical therapy session. My knee, a persistent reminder of life’s unexpected hurdles, demands constant attention and care. Every stretch, every exercise, is a step towards recovery, yet the road feels endless.

As I pushed through the therapy routine, my mind wandered to sunlit beaches and mountain trails. I long to escape, to plan that elusive summer trip that’s been postponed for far too long. The heatwave news only fueled my desire to break free and bask in a change of scenery, somewhere far from the clinical smell of the PT room.

The therapist’s encouraging words echoed, reminding me that healing is a journey, not a race. It’s easy to feel impatient, especially when summer’s call grows louder. But each session, each small victory, brings me closer to the freedom of movement I crave. I have to trust the process, knowing that this temporary interruption is a necessary step towards my ultimate goal.

Back at home, I revisited my travel wishlist, allowing myself a moment of hope. The news may be filled with daunting challenges, from heatwaves to personal setbacks, but it also serves as a reminder of resilience. I’m determined to make this summer memorable, not just for the places I’ll go, but for the strength I’ll regain along the way.

So, as the weekend approaches, I’ll keep my eyes on the horizon, embracing each step of recovery with the promise of adventure on the other side.

  2. At least we have a choice, and most often, AC. I can’t imagine what some of my fellow humans are going through, when my brain doesn’t work at all except in a narrow range of temperatures.

At the same time the Governor of Florida declared climate change not real.

  3. Have you tried a knee brace? PT gave me one that looks like something Mad Max would wear but it works. I also wear shock absorbing shoes.

My knee seems to have improved a bit so that I can do short hikes without a brace. That’s partly due to cortisone shots, though.
