As you may know I love to travel. Sadly, the pandemic hindered and blocked that part of my being.
However, as a past avid traveler, I’ve always believed that the true essence of a place often reveals itself when you choose to visit during its off-season. While many opt for the peak tourist periods, there’s something incredibly rewarding about exploring destinations like Guatemala, Panama, Japan, and more when the crowds are thinner, the locals more accessible, and the experience undeniably authentic. I have truly been blessed to have done those types of trips.
One of the most enchanting aspects of traveling off-season is the opportunity it affords to forge genuine connections with the local population. As I recently experienced in Guatemala, the absence of throngs of tourists allowed me to connect with the people on a deeper level. I had meaningful conversations with locals who were more willing to share their stories, traditions, and perspectives. Hearing their views on everything from national elections to global affairs enriched my journey in ways I could never have imagined.
Traveling off-season often means you have the luxury of personalizing your adventures. In Guatemala, I had the privilege of tailoring my itinerary to suit my interests and desires. Whether it was exploring ancient Mayan ruins, delving into the country’s rich cultural heritage, or embarking on spontaneous adventures, there was ample flexibility to make each day uniquely mine.
Off-season travel reveals hidden gems that may go unnoticed during busier times. In Panama, I stumbled upon pristine beaches and untouched landscapes where I could savor nature’s beauty in tranquility. In Japan, I found serene temples and serene gardens devoid of the usual crowds, allowing me to immerse myself fully in the peaceful ambiance.
One of the often-overlooked perks of traveling off-season is the ease of securing restaurant reservations. With fewer tourists vying for tables, you can indulge in authentic local cuisine with minimal hassle. In Guatemala, I savored delectable dishes at charming eateries, all without the stress of long waiting times.
The Gift of Time:
Perhaps one of the most cherished aspects of off-season travel is the gift of time. With fewer attractions overrun by tourists, you can take your time to absorb the culture, history, and beauty of a place without feeling rushed. It’s a chance to savor the details, engage with your surroundings, and truly be present in the moment.
As I reflect on my off-season adventures, I am reminded of the remarkable beauty and authenticity that can be discovered when we embrace the road less traveled. These experiences have left an indelible mark on my soul, teaching me the invaluable lesson that the heart and soul of a destination often reveal themselves most profoundly when you choose to explore it on your terms.
So, if you’re an adventurer at heart, I encourage you to consider the wonders of off-season travel. Let the world unveil its hidden treasures, and may you find the same enriching connections and breathtaking discoveries that have made my journeys unforgettable.
Where will your next off-season adventure take you?
Happy travels,

Off season travel you ask? The West Wales (UK) coastline in the old VeeDub (Volkswagen Bay camper van). It is local in reality and not as diverse as your own travels. But the VeeDub Bus attracts people, who then sit in conversation over a freshly brewed tea or coffee. I enjoy reading your posts. Thank you.
