The Wham! documentary is a beautiful testament to friendship

I loved Wham! I loved George Michael. But, I didn’t really know much about Andrew Ridgely. I hadn’t focused on him during my Wham! fandom phase. Actually, that phase has yet to end.

On a whim, I decided to watch the Wham! documentary on Netflix, and I was left wanting more. I was taken in by their friendship and just how instrumental Andrew really was to Wham! He really was the driving force in the beginning with a great sense of humor and joy.

The Wham! documentary has a great soundtrack (if you’rea fan), set of archival footage & testimonials from over 30 years ago that punctuate a story of a beautiful friendship between two kids that grew into mega-stardom for both and an act of selflessness by one to propel the other even further. It’s not a story you hear of often. But it is the proverbial saying that if you love something enough, you should set it free. And, George soared and Andrew was there to help him fly. Andrew knew when it was time to step aside from Wham, and he seemed to genuinely relish in seeing George grow into the star that he became.

Sadly, we know the long-term ending and that George’s long-standing struggles with his identity followed him to the end. But I do wish there was another hour or two of the Wham! documentary. It’s a thing of beauty to see such an earnest friendship play out in such a way that to this day, Wham! is still regarded as one of the greatest musical duos to have existed in pop history.
