Hubris. There’s a lot of that going around these days. This decade. Humblebragging has become a funny bit in social and professional circles. You know what is lacking, though? Teachability.

Just because someone can “google” they may believe they have done their research and are experts at X,Y, and Z. Well, not everything is true out there. And, just because you found a fact or two, does it mean you are an expert.

Teachability. It’s a quality that seems to be lacking these days. Lived experience should and needs to acknowledged but just because you’ve been doing something the same way for 20 years doesn’t mean your way is the right way. Or the only way. Have you seen that Ted Talk on how we’ve all been tying our shoes wrong? Watch it. The video is less than five minutes long and it can be, if so allowed, a teachable moment.

As a whole, we need to embrace teachable moments. Moments that teach us a new skill or fact and moments that allow us to attain self-insight. It is not an easy thing to do for many people. It’s about allowing yourself to be vulnerable.

Teachable. Vulnerable. Do so. Be so.
