What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received is deceptively simple. Not everything is urgent.
It sounds obvious, almost dismissible, until you realize how much of life is designed to feel urgent. Emails marked “ASAP.” Texts that demand immediate replies. Other people’s stress, wrapped up and handed to you like a baton in a relay you never agreed to run.
But here’s the quiet truth I keep coming back to. Not everything that is loud is important. Volume is not the same as value. Just because something is flashing, pinging, or escalating doesn’t mean it deserves your immediate energy.
I’ve learned (and am still learning) that someone else’s chaos is not a summons. It can be an invitation, sure. But it’s one you are allowed to decline. The world will keep spinning if you don’t dive headfirst into every fire drill. And more often than not, the fires that burn the brightest are the ones that burn out the fastest.
The same goes for deadlines. Just because something is urgent for someone else doesn’t automatically make it urgent for you. We absorb timelines the way we absorb moods which means quickly, almost unconsciously and suddenly we’re rushing, reacting, tightening, without ever asking. Is this actually mine to carry?
There’s a kind of quiet power in pausing. In deciding what gets your attention and what doesn’t. In remembering that your energy is finite, and therefore, valuable.
So these days, I try to ask myself a simple question before I react. Is this urgent, or does it just feel urgent?
The answer isn’t always comfortable. But it’s almost always clarifying.

For me it has to be urgent and important.

Makes me think of the Mexican expression “Relaja la raja” – very sound advice for this current moment in our collective timeline.
