Digital Leash: The Illusion of Choice

We love choices. We say we want options. More flavors, more shows, more ways to customize our coffee and our lives until everything feels uniquely ours.

And yet something feels off.

Because the choices don’t feel as expansive as they used to. They feel curated. Narrowed. Pre-decided in a way we can’t quite see but definitely feel.

You open a streaming app with hundreds of shows, allegedly and somehow you’re picking between the same five that were placed neatly in front of you. You shop online with over thousands of products and still end up choosing from the “recommended for you” row like it’s a digital shrug.

It turns out our brains aren’t actually wired for endless choice. Too many options overwhelm us. We get decision fatigue. We freeze, or we default to what’s easiest, closest, most familiar.

And that’s exactly where the digital leash tightens.

Because while we’re busy feeling overwhelmed, the algorithms step in helpfully, of course to simplify things. To guide us. To decide just enough so we don’t have to.

But here’s the catch. When choice is filtered for convenience, it stops being entirely ours.

We’re not choosing from the full menu. We’re choosing from what we’re shown.

And what we’re shown? That’s been shaped by past clicks, predicted behaviors, ad dollars, and a quiet, constant calculation about what will keep us engaged the longest.

So yes, we still have choices.

They’re just pre-approved.

The digital leash doesn’t yank. It nudges. It gently reduces the infinite into something manageable, something clickable, something we’ll say yes to without thinking too hard.

And maybe that’s the most unsettling part.

We don’t feel controlled.

We feel helped.

  2. the oddity is the algorithm is not picking for you something different, it is based really on your history and you can click past them. I never really got much from it, I find it annoying noise.
