Somewhere between Instagram’s new polish button and the Kardashians walking into a bar pretending to sip a pint like they’ve done it every Tuesday since 1997, humanity has entered its most absurd era: the Age of Curated Imperfection.
Yes, apparently imperfection is now “in.” The smudged eyeliner, the messy bun, the “I just woke up like this” selfie that almost certainly required six attempts, three filters, a ring light, and a staged pile of laundry in the background to signal relatability. Even flaws now feel choreographed. As if we’re collectively auditioning for the role of “Authentic Human #3,” and the casting director will only believe us if we appear perfectly imperfect.
But honestly, hasn’t it always been this way? Long before Instagram, people practiced their smiles in mirrors before walking into parties; they turned their bodies just so when someone whipped out a camera; they pretended their shoes didn’t hurt while dying inside. Humanity has never been about pure, unfiltered authenticity. We’ve always polished ourselves. Instagram just gave us a button for it.
And then there are the Kardashians, the reigning monarchs of the Curated Life. I’ve never watched a single episode, but even I know that any time a Kardashian goes to a bar to drink a pint, there are at least three lighting technicians and one person whose sole job is to move their hair just off the shoulder. We all know they’re not living “authentically,” but somehow we keep consuming the fantasy. It’s as if like we’re watching a nature documentary about a species that thrives only in the wilds of Calabasas.
The real danger? We’ve become trained to perform for the camera at all times. It’s no longer “live your life and capture a moment” it’s “capture a moment and then live your life around it.” Pose first, experience second. Filters optional, but encouraged.
And now, with the polish button promising to blur pores and soften reality, we risk forgetting what actual faces and actual lives look like. Imperfection used to be the natural baseline. Now it’s an aesthetic, an algorithm, a marketing strategy.
So maybe the most rebellious thing we can do in 2026 is to not polish. Not stage. Not curate the “mess.” Just be real, without the strategic smudge.
Although, let’s be honest. I’ll still take a photo from my good angle. We’re only human, after all.
