This weekend, I watched the latest Mission: Impossible installment- The Final Reckoning (is it really the final one? Who knows anymore?). What I do know is that this franchise has lived a long life powered by Tom Cruise’s energy, charisma, and refusal to slow down. And, while this latest film was probably 45 minutes too long, with enough flashbacks to rival a therapy session, I walked away from it with some unexpected feels.
First off, yes — Tom Cruise is finally starting to show his age. He’s human! He’s still sprinting, still jumping off cliffs, but now there’s just the faintest echo of mortality behind the jaw clench. Second, that underwater scene was stunning! But maybe needed a little more tension. Third, the biplane scene? Classic Cruise madness and his age didn’t stop him. Now, some issues. The masks? Not nearly enough of them for a supposed farewell. The plot? Convoluted. I mean, even my dream journal makes more linear sense some days. Who were all these new people in the cast who I couldn’t quite track? Seems like hedging the bets for a possible future movie.
And yet, there’s a line near the end: “The son of a b*tch did it. He did it again” that made me well up. Because yes, he did do it again. Thirty years of impossible missions, and he still came through. That line hit me not just as a fan, but as a human trying to make sense of my own sequels. My own rewrites. My own stunts.
Maybe I won’t rewatch this one every year. But I needed that ending. That little whisper of resilience. The reminder that even if things feel too long, too twisted, too exhausting, it’s still possible to pull it off. Again.
So this week, if you find yourself underwater (literally or metaphorically), just remember: the mission may be impossible, but you? You’ve done harder things before.
And if Tom Cruise can climb and balance on a biplane at 60+? You can send that email, finish that draft, or say no to that 9 p.m. meeting invite.
Let’s go. Cue the music.

I’ve not seen a single Mission Impossible but I did watch the TV series. I like the message here. We can do hard things over & over again.
