Last week I wrote about my dogs’ live of sitting on the remote control. Then it got me thinking about how I’d like to dedicate a weekly column to them. Let’s see if I can indeed keep it going. I’ll probably write more than just one post about them. But this is life from the dog couch!
Here we go.
There’s a universal law of the dog couch:
If I need it, one of my dogs is probably sitting on it.
Laptop? Claimed.
Folder with important work papers? Claimed.
That exact spot I was just about to sit in with my coffee and existential dread?
Claimed.
Take this morning. My little dachshund decided my open laptop was clearly a heated luxury pad meant just for him. He flopped down with dramatic flair, as if to say, “Why are you trying to email when you could be admiring me?”
And honestly? He had a point.
So I let him sit. Closed the laptop. Sipped my coffee. Watched him sigh into a nap.
Because sometimes, life gives you a reminder that sitting still is more important than hitting “send.”
That warmth—be it from a device or a dog—is something to savor.
And that occasionally, the best productivity hack is a nap under a sunbeam (preferably while someone else answers your emails).
Truth: The things we think are urgent often aren’t. But your dog sitting on your laptop? That’s the universe telling you to pause. Listen to it.

One of my dog’s favorite moves is to jump into the seat I was in if I get up for a minute to get something.
