I’ve been binging this show Wild Cards, and I have to say, it’s been an interesting ride. Max, the female lead, had this line that made me pause and chuckle, “So the boat doesn’t boat?” A classic zinger. And honestly, it got me thinking—how often do we encounter things that simply don’t do what they’re supposed to do?
Think about it: we all have that chipped mug sitting on the shelf. You don’t use it for coffee anymore because it’s chipped, and no one wants to sip from a vessel of danger. But, there it is—still taking up space. It doesn’t fulfill its role anymore, but we just can’t seem to part with it. And that chipped mug is in good company because society is full of non-boating boats.
How many things in life keep floating around, not quite functioning? Relationships, policies, random household gadgets—like that juicer I bought in a health craze three years ago, now gathering dust in the back of the cabinet. Apparently, it’s more decorative than functional.
Max’s line in Wild Cards got me laughing because, well, sometimes the boat really doesn’t boat. And yet, we keep hanging on, expecting it to magically sail one day. Maybe there’s comfort in the idea that even though it’s not doing its job, it’s still there, reminding us of what it could do, if only…
So, here’s to all the chipped mugs, broken boats, and the non-functional nonsense we collect. May they continue to make us laugh and question why we ever thought they were such a good idea in the first place. Maybe they’re not boating, but they sure do make life interesting.

I’ve got a whole basement full of boats that don’t boat, pans that don’t cook, sleds that don’t slide, et al.

I have three mugs on my desktop. They are perfect for holding: pens & pencils, a bottle of liquid B12 I don’t want spilling, and the phone. They each have stories. They’re been there forever. They’ve never been used for drinking anything. One has a secret I need to be reminded of.
