Traveling on Christmas Eve: Why Did I Do This to Myself?

Ah, Christmas Eve—normally a time of cozy warmth, festive cheer, and the smell of pine needles. But here I am, traveling the day before Christmas. Why, you ask? Because that’s what my airline points allowed for! Genius? Maybe not.

It all started with American Airlines facing a ground stoppage. Yep, right as I was flying American. Fun, right? A festive computer glitch delayed the start, and I thought, “Surely that’s the worst of it!” Wrong. As soon as I hit the road, traffic became a beast. People honking, waving their hands around in holiday rage—merry times indeed. My son just sat in awe, watching the chaos unfold, probably wondering if humanity was ever going to survive Christmas Eve travel.

The best part? Boarding passes. On the phones. You know, that thing that’s supposed to make everything smoother? Except they wouldn’t scan. Luckily, being the ultra-prepared traveler I am, I had three phones on hand. Each had a different pass that miraculously worked on different scanners—let’s call that a Christmas miracle.

And now I’m heading to Turkey, a land rumored to have legendary traffic. I’m already prepping myself for it. But as I sit here wondering what I forgot, I remind myself that as long as I have my phone, passport, and credit card… right? Wait… meds! Yep, definitely the meds.

Here’s to the magic (and madness) of holiday travel!

  1. It’s much better to stay at home. Here in the UK, as well. We always travel in January. Hotel prices are lower, service is better, and only a few people are on the road or in the air. We traditionally go up North into the winter wonderland of Northern Scandinavia.
Nevertheless, enjoy your trip to Turkey.

  2. “I’m living at a peak of clarity and beauty I never knew existed. Every part of me is attuned to the work. I soak it up into my pores during the day, and at night—in the moments before I pass off into sleep—ideas explode into my head like fireworks. There is no greater joy than the burst of solution to a problem. Incredible that anything could happen to take away this bubbling energy, the zest that fills everything I do. It’s as if all the knowledge I’ve soaked in during the past months has coalesced and lifted me to a peak of light and understanding. This is beauty, love, and truth all rolled into one. This is joy.”
