The Shortest Day of the Year: A Soup, Snow, and Hallmark Kinda Day

Today marks the shortest day of the year, and as if Mother Nature herself was in on the cosmic joke, it snowed last night. Not just a light dusting either, but enough to blanket the world in that hushed, pristine silence that almost forces you to stop and breathe. The kind of snow that tells you, “Hey, maybe it’s time to slow down.”

Usually, the fast pace of December would have me running out the door, mentally juggling tasks with the finesse of a circus performer. But today? No, today is different. Today, I’m sinking into the inevitability of a cozy, stay-at-home day. The kind of day where soup simmering on the stove fills the house with warmth, and the Hallmark Channel’s predictable holiday movies are a guilty, comforting pleasure.

You know the ones I’m talking about. The big-city career woman returns to her small town, only to find love and the true meaning of Christmas within 90 minutes. They’re the cinematic equivalent of a warm blanket and fuzzy socks, and on a day like today, that’s exactly the mood I’m leaning into.

Mother Nature, with her well-timed snowstorm, is giving me exactly what I need—a forced timeout. A reminder that rest is not only okay, it’s necessary. In a world that’s constantly on the go, sometimes the universe (or a good snowstorm) steps in and reminds you to just…be.

So, as the daylight fades almost as soon as it begins, I’m okay with this day of cozy stillness. I’m okay with letting the world outside carry on without me for a little while. The snow will melt, the to-do list will be there tomorrow, but today? Today is for soup, snowflakes, and slowing down.

Thanks, Mother Nature. I needed this.
