Fireworks, Freedom, and Furry Friends: A Quiet 4th of July

Ah, the 4th of July—a day filled with barbecues, patriotic songs, and fireworks lighting up the sky. I haven’t watched fireworks in ages, but I have fond memories of those dazzling displays. There was that one time in D.C. when the sky exploded in color over the National Mall, each burst more beautiful than the last. And then there was Los Angeles, where fireworks surrounded me in a symphony of light and sound. It was like being in the middle of a battlefield, minus the actual danger and plus a lot of hot dogs.

But this year, I’m opting for a quieter celebration. I’ll be at home, cuddling with my dogs, ensuring they aren’t too terrified by the booms and bangs outside. Fireworks may be spectacular for us, but for our furry friends, it’s like an apocalyptic nightmare.

As I sit in the relative calm of my living room, I’ll inevitably ponder the meaning of freedom. My history classes taught me about the struggles and triumphs that built this nation, and it’s hard not to reflect on how we are living through historic times ourselves. Every 4th of July is a reminder of where we’ve been and where we’re headed.

So, where will we be next year? Who knows? Maybe I’ll venture out to see fireworks again, or maybe I’ll continue my new tradition of quiet reflection and dog cuddles. Either way, I’ll be thinking about the freedom we cherish and the history we continue to write each day. Here’s to a peaceful 4th, filled with gratitude for the past and hope for the future—and a little less noise for our four-legged companions.

  1. I have noticed that hunting dogs don’t freak out about fireworks like most. We should be able to get our pups used to the bangs and pops so they don’t frighten. It is a bit of work and most people won’t consider it worth it.
