Life Without a Computer: A Dystopian Tale of Lost Screens

Your life without a computer: what does it look like?

Sigh. As I sat here for eight hours interacting via a screen, I pondered the implications. Picture this: A world without computers. It sounds like the stuff of dystopian novels or the premise of a sci-fi thriller. But wait, is it really that far-fetched? As we ponder the notion of a life sans computers, it becomes increasingly evident that such a reality may indeed be a thing of the past.

I’m old enough to remember that once upon a time, computers were these clunky, stationary devices that occupied precious desk space. They hummed, they beeped, and they occasionally froze at the most inconvenient moments. Ah, the good old days! Actually, I must confess that I still have a desktop upstairs.

Nowadays, our lives are seamlessly interwoven with these sleek, pocket-sized devices that we affectionately call “phones.” They’ve essentially become our lifelines, our mini-computers on the go. We write blogs on them, put together presentations, and maintain a constant stream of communication with the world at large. It’s probably too much of a stream.

Think about it—when was the last time you saw someone pen a handwritten letter, pop it into an envelope, affix a stamp, and actually mail it? It’s a rarity in the digital age. Our emails, texts, and social media posts are now the primary means of communication. It’s like we’re all part of a global chatroom, whether we like it or not.

So, here’s the crux of the matter: Can we truly envision a life without computers when our phones have seamlessly filled that void? The answer is a resounding no. It’s like trying to unscramble an egg or fit a square peg into a round hole. The genie is out of the digital bottle, and there’s no turning back.

We’ve become so entwined with our pocket-sized screens that they’ve become extensions of ourselves. They’re not just for communication and work; they’re for entertainment, navigation, shopping, and even dating. They’re our virtual Swiss Army knives, ready to tackle any task. So, there we have it. We’re done. We’re in. We’re on track to be ruled by the screen.

  3. It wasn’t a bad world for those in “developed” countries.

I grew up in a world without computers. Or at least computers a person could easily access.

When I went to college my computer account was rigorously managed. The IBM 360/44 only had so much capacity. You weren’t allowed any more computer time than was reasonably required to do your coding homework. There were games on that computer but only people with lots of computer time in their budget got to play them. Professors and grad students.

Prior to college, I had no acquaintance with them except for the punchcards that were used for the bill for my book club membership.
