If you had to give up one word that you use regularly, what would it be?
When thinking of what word I would give up, I immediately thought of the word “dude.” I hate that I use that word. It just randomly comes out in conversations, and it is meant as an admonishment. Yet, no one can take that word seriously. Many, if they are old enough, will either think of Fast Times at Ridgemont High or of the movie called the Big Lebowski. Again, no one can take that word seriously. One may even look like a fool using that word. It is truly an annoying word.
I was going to say I would strike that word from my everyday usage. However, I do use another word that just bothers me to no end. Or rather, s phrase. I hate that I use “I’m tired” so often. I don’t want to be tired. I don’t like missing out on happy moments. Maybe it’s a bit of fear of misding out (fomo).
No more “I’m tired.” Now it is, let’s, give it a try.

This blog post really hits home! The idea of giving up a word or phrase from our regular vocabulary is intriguing, and it forces us to examine our communication patterns. I can relate to the struggle with the word “dude” and how it can unintentionally detract from serious conversations. It’s true; some words just carry a certain baggage!
But your decision to replace “I’m tired” with “let’s give it a try” is both inspiring and empowering. It’s a mindset shift from fatigue to enthusiasm, from hesitation to embracing new experiences. It’s a reminder to approach life with a more positive outlook and a willingness to seize opportunities. Your post encourages all of us to be mindful of our words and their impact on our lives. Thanks for this refreshing perspective! 👏🗣️

I have a lot (!) of words/phrases I use way too often. I think . . . “like, really?!” would be at the top of the list.

I don’t get the luxury of giving up “I’m tired.” I live daily with the excruciating exhaustion of ME/CFS, and still trying to write some fiction when the brain fog clears a bit.
