Apparently, according to some clever neuroscientists (the kind who spend their days scanning brains instead of doom-scrolling LinkedIn), we humans average about 6,200 thoughts a day. That’s 6,200 neural costume changes. One minute you’re thinking about breakfast, the next about that email you forgot to send, and suddenly you’re contemplating the meaning of life while reheating leftovers.
So if our brains are switching gears thousands of times a day, it’s no wonder we occasionally short-circuit. Those “brain freezes” aren’t just from ice cream. They’re from cognitive traffic jams. Imagine thousands of tiny neurons waving their hands yelling, “Me next! Me next!” It’s chaos up there.
And then we add multitasking to the mix. Oh, glorious multitasking. The modern badge of productivity. We’re cooking breakfast, checking our phones, half-listening to a conversation, and mentally planning the week. That’s not multitasking. That’s a neural mosh pit. Our brains aren’t computers running multiple tabs. They’re more like jello on a rollercoaster.Wiggling between states of firmness, desperately trying to keep from splattering on the mental dashboard.
No wonder we sometimes crave stillness, zoning out on the couch as professional potatoes. It’s not laziness. It’s neural recovery mode. Every “blank stare” moment might just be the brain’s way of cooling its circuits; especially that Gen Z stare people keep talking about. Maybe they’re not disinterested. Maybe they’re just wisely pacing their 6,200 daily thought transitions. A sort of digital meditation in slow motion.
So the next time you find yourself staring at nothing, or forgetting why you walked into a room, take comfort. You’re not losing it. You’re just giving your jello-brain a well-earned break between transitions.
Oh wait! There’s another thought. Make that 6,201.
