Have you ever had that weird, inexplicable moment where you’re walking along and suddenly feel like you’re doing something absurd? That happened to me today. As I was walking to the train after work, minding my business, I suddenly had the overwhelming sensation that I was wearing two different pairs of shoes. Just one of those gut-level, “Wait, what am I doing?” thoughts that hits you like a ton of bricks.
I looked down—half-expecting to see a sneaker on one foot and a sandal on the other—but nope, I was fine. Matching shoes. Crisis averted.
But why did I have that feeling? It wasn’t like I had a history of mismatched footwear. Well, maybe once. And I can blame that on a hectic morning. But today? It was the foggy weather, the fact that my too-heavy coat felt like I’d missed the memo that it’s spring now, or maybe my energy being high in the morning only to fizzle by the end of the day.
It got me thinking about how life can sometimes feel like wearing two different shoes. The upside-down world where everything is just slightly off-kilter, and nothing quite aligns the way you expect. One minute, you’re all put together, and the next, you’re half-convinced you’ve gone and done something completely bizarre.
Thankfully, I was spared the mismatched-shoe embarrassment today. But in a world where anything feels possible, maybe it’s not so far-fetched to feel like you’ve slipped into two different realities. And on some days, that’s exactly the vibe.
