It’s funny how a simple scroll through Facebook can take you down a rabbit hole, tugging at your heartstrings and bringing back bittersweet memories. Today, I stumbled upon an old friend’s page—she’s been gone for five years, but her profile is still there, quietly holding on to fragments of her life.
Someone had posted a text exchange between us that made me laugh out loud. She’d sent me a message during a meeting: “You should be mindful of your non-verbal expressions.” A few minutes later, another text came in, “You should be mindful of your verbal expressions as well.” Oh, how true that can be in so many situations! It made me chuckle, but then a wave of sadness hit me. Losing those witty exchanges feels like losing a little piece of daily joy.
This is why I’m so sentimental about keeping photographs, text messages—anything that captures those fleeting moments. I have close to 100,000 digital photos, and I look at least one of my son’s baby pictures every day. There’s something comforting in knowing those memories are preserved, even if it’s just for me. They ground me, make me laugh, sometimes tear up, and remind me of life’s beautiful chaos.
I guess that’s why I’ll hold on to all those digital keepsakes forever. They’re not just pictures or texts; they’re little pieces of the people I’ve loved, the moments I’ve lived, and the laughter that’s still very much alive in my heart.
