It’s Sunday, right?

Last week I woke up one morning completely discombobulated. I wondered what day it was and couldn’t quite figure it out. Luckily for me, both my cell phone and Alexa agreed on the date. That was a start. However, all that day I felt a bit off. During these times, days have no real meaning. What’s one day versus the other?

I go into work everyday of the workweek. Thus, days supposedly do have meaning. Yet, they don’t in that they all run into one another. One 12 hour day is another 12 hour day. Not even television helps to differentiate the days anymore. There is no Thursday versus Monday television lineup.

Soon, days will have meaning again. I know that. Yet, the meaning of each day may very well change coming forward. Could be that people come to dread Fridays for it may signal the end of a strucutred time. Or it may become an even more welcomed reprieve.

Either way, I think today is Sunday and let’s see what that brings. The birds are chirping. Maybe they know what day it is.

  1. I know what you mean. While I’ve been able to keep track of what day it is, I’m getting really fuzzy on what happened when. This week? Last week? Last month? I need to find some better mental time anchors.

For me, I know when it’s weekend because I must prepare for the Sabbath. Sunday’s I’m lookin looking forward to ending my day with Date My Family program on Channel 161 DSTV.
I kinda loose counting at the end of business day on Monday. Wednesday still feels like Monday because my daughter has to attend Ms Teams live stream of her teacher. Before I know it it’s Friday afternoon when my wife hides the remote for the kids; not to open TV during Sabbath hours.

  3. Sunday brunch after church was the big thing here at the retirement community – lots of special foods, and sometimes one of our kids – but the community voted to have dinner on Sundays during the lockdown (delivered to our doors) instead of brunch in the middle of the day, so we’ve lost both anchors.

If it weren’t for the computer, I’d have no place to check – I don’t use the phone much.

Humans will have to reestablish all kinds of rituals. Let’s do some thinking and keep the better ones only.
