From Princess Bride to Antiope: A sign of the times

When I was younger I loved the move The Princess Bride. Who wouldn’t love it when your soulmate constantly states “as you wish”?  It was a romantic comedy in the vein of a fairy tale, of sorts. Although, honestly what I really liked the most was when Inigo Montoya notes “I just work for Vizzini to pay the bills. There’s not a lot of money in revenge“.  What a great character that was. Who knew that Mandy Patankin was supposedly such a grumpy person on set? He’s a fabulous actor. I also liked it when the evil Prince Humperdinck stated

Tyrone, you know how much I love watching you work, but I’ve got my country’s 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder and Guilder to frame for it; I’m swamped. “

I laugh at that every time. I so want to say that at my next meeting and see how people react. If they react at all. It may be that not many people are familiar with the Princess Bride. The horror!

Back when I watched the Princess Bride I remembered that the pricness had been on a soap opera called Santa Barbara.  It was a new glitzy soap. I don’t believe that it lasted very long. I watched the first month, I believe, and was done.  I did think it was cool how she transitioned to movies. And then it seemed that she disappeared. Well, the actress-Robin Wright. She married Sean Penn and then a few movies here and there (i.e. Forrest Gump).

Then I saw her this past year in Wonder Woman as Antiope as a fierce warrior. She went from a Bride needing rescue to an Amazon warrior who could fight large armies. Not a bad transition across her acting career. Such a shift does seem to reflect a larger zeitgeist. She went from needing assistance to being the one to fight a good fight. In the Princess Bride, the men had all the fun with swords with fights till the pain. In Wonder Woman, she surely could handle many weapons. I admit that I like both of those roles and seeing how one can morph into the other. I am happy to hear that her character of Antiope will live on in some way in the Wonder Woman franchise. Her character is too good to let go.
From a princess to a warrior, a wild ride for the times.

  1. You do know that she had/has a stopover on House of Cards, which I believe is a Netflix series? I’m not sure, though, if that character is a step forward or a step back on Ms. Wright’s development arc. Guess I’ll have to finally see Princess Bride, which I think is still on my DVR, and possibly catch a season or 2 of HOC so I can evaluate that myself. I did finally see WW and agree that her character there is fabulous!
