Whimsy on the Hudson: New York, Without the Hustle

I love a good trip. I do not necessarily love the process of getting there. Airports, security lines, boarding groups, flight delays, and the general indignity of being treated like a suspicious package do not always inspire wanderlust.

So this weekend, I opted for a low-hassle getaway right here in New York State. No flying. No complicated logistics. Just the Hudson River, fall foliage, rum, and a little history.

Honestly, New York, you are showing off.

Fall may be your finest season. The changing leaves are phenomenal, the landscape looks like someone has gone completely overboard with the color saturation, and suddenly all those places we rush past during the other eleven months deserve a second look.

I took a Hudson River cruise. Easy-peasy. Calm, beautiful, and blissfully lacking in the usual demands of modern life. No one needed anything from me. There was nothing to solve, no urgent email to answer, no decision more consequential than where to look next.

Then came Kingston, where I discovered a tiki bar serving phenomenal drinks, rum flights, and wonderfully ridiculous mugs. Whimsical rums. Whimsical vessels. An entire little universe of tropical escapism transplanted to the Hudson Valley.

There is something deeply appealing about a place that takes its cocktails seriously but doesn’t take itself too seriously. We could all use more whimsy. Particularly those of us who spend our days being responsible adults, which is a wildly overrated activity.

And then, because apparently I was having a weekend of contrasts, I visited the Vanderbilt Mansion.

Beautiful gardens. Spectacular views. Tranquility everywhere. The kind of place that makes you wonder how much better everyone’s mental health might be if we all had access to a historic estate and a very large gardening staff.

I also learned, or at least concluded, that Cooper Anderson apparently hasn’t been there. (Cooper, if you’re reading this, consider it a recommendation.)

What struck me most was the reminder that New York is not all hustle and bustle.

We spend so much time associating this state with New York City with its noise, ambition, traffic, crowds, and collective inability to walk at a normal human pace, that we sometimes forget how much beauty and quiet exist just a short trip away.

The Hudson Valley offers a different rhythm. History without a lecture. Nature without a forced march. Travel without an airport. And rum flights without having to leave the state.

Perhaps that’s the secret to a good getaway. It doesn’t have to be exotic, expensive, or logistically exhausting. Sometimes you just need to change your scenery, look at something beautiful, drink something whimsical, and remember that the world is considerably larger than your daily to-do list.

I returned home refreshed, which is saying something for someone whose preferred vacations usually involve going somewhere farther away.

New York, you surprise me. Or perhaps I simply remembered what was already here.

Either way, I’m a fan.

And now I am wondering how many more weekends I can fill with beautiful views, interesting cocktails, and absolutely no airport security.

I welcome your thoughts
