For the love of Lighthouses: Finding one’s path forward
I have always loved lighthouses. Even when I lived in the South Bronx, where I only knew the blocks around me, I dreamt of lighthouses. Once when stranded abroad due to a hurricane, I searched for a lighthouse in Curacao. It was a lovey adventure. To me lighthouses have always represented an homage to adventure, the environment and a marriage between that which is man-made and nature.
Before lighthouses, mariners were guided by fires built on hilltops. Old coins from Alexandria have lighthouses depicted on them. Lighthouses were developed to provide more than just a lit guide. As I plan my trips, I often look for lighthouses to visit. As one climbs up to the top of a lighthouse there is a sense of being able to achieve that which many note to be un-achievable. As I navigate the seemingly murky waters of my days, I dream of climbing a lighthouse and having a path lit before me leading to what is my true path. I know that my true path cannot be determined by others. I have my path within me and I just need to see it and walk the path, swim the waters.
Finding my footing
Illuminatingly clear
I own my way forth

If at some point you find yourself in Maine, the Portland Head Light (which is actually in Cape Elizabeth) is a must see. And Rockland’s Breakwater, because there’s a stone walkway so you can actually walk right up to the lighthouse.

I always thought it was a shame that they don’t have lighthouse keepers in many places nowadays. I think I’ve got the necessary social skills to make a good one.

It’s amazing how a physical object can become a symbol of so much more. Thank you so much for sharing your passion for lighthouses.
This is Brantley from the Brantley Blog, by the way. Hope all is well with you! I wanted to reconnect since you were one of my followers. I’m working on a new blog now called The Story in the Frame. It’s an artistic collaboration between myself and my girlfriend (a photographer). I write short stories about her photos. Please check us out!
