Because of molecules we are connected to the outside world from our bodies

We are in our third week of snow and ice storms here in the northeastern part of the United States. It could be depressing if it were not for the repeated snow days that give one a sense of jubilee. Although, we should be worried for come June the school year may extend itself further than what we would like.

Staying at home watching the blue jays land on the snow in my backyard is a lovely moment of zen.  I stare and it flutters. It flutters and I stare. It is a snow day and thus I get to see my son’s creativity at full force as he gathers all his toys and creates an army to take on the zombies.  He has warned me that the zombie apocalypse is coming.  As such, it’s a beautiful winter scenery. The scenery is so calm (despite the pending zombie onslaught) and beautiful one could almost sing, if life were a musical:

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes, Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes, Silver white winters that melt into springs, These are a few of my favorite things.

However, because I am me, I start to think of one of the most depressing films I have seen. I saw it so long ago, I don’t know if I quite still understand it. I am talking about the “Ice Storm” in which there are two quotes that I like to string into one sentence:

“Because of molecules we are connected to the outside world from our bodies…. yet it’s not easy to keep from just wandering out of life”

We look at the snow outside our windows and know we are deeply  connected to the world outside and to each molecule that is out there. We feel it in our bones. The snow and the snowflakes remind us of our fragility. The snow falls and dissipates and if it does cause some heartache it eventually does go away. Although the snow seems here to stay, it is very easy for it to just wander out of our lives as do many people and as do we.

Although, social media makes it that we can stay connected through all our life changes, we can still just as easily just disappear from the public consciousness. Look at the Superbowl viewer reactions to Missy Elliot. It was like Missy who? She was huge on the music scene not that very long ago. Look at Michael Keaton, he is on the verge of winning an Oscar for his portrayal of a washed-up actor making a comeback in the Birdman. Art imitating life, one molecule at a time. Snowflakes are so unique and they are gone in an instant falling in with the other snowflakes creating one large eventually-dirty stomped-on pile.

In the Ice Storm, the Paul Hood voiceover reminds us “It’s like someone’s always leaving the door open to the next world…”  It’s an ominous and morbid quote but can be true of many situations other than death.  There were many doors that we encounter in life, and in a way it’s like that game show “Let’s make a deal” for you never know what’s behind door numbers 1, 2 and 3.

Enjoy the wandering path despite the ice storm.
