29,000 steps: For now my fitbit tolerates my west coast living

While I am not a complete fan yet of Los Angeles, I have come to appreciate (its not very hard to by the way) the nice weather. I have especially come to appreciate sun and 70 degree weather in the so-called winter time.   However, make no mistake about it, I am still a die-hard New Yorker.   Thus, it was with great anticipation that I looked forward to being out on the east coast this past week.   I wil pay no mind to the actual activities that brought me out there. While, I didn’t get a chance to be in my beloved new York City, I did have a chance to be in both Washington, DC and Boston.

The cherry blossoms in DC were delightful. Who can turn away from cherry blossoms? So serene and majestic looking. I got to walk under the trees and let the petals fall softly onto me.  I am quite fortunate that a few years back I got to visit Tokyo during their cherry blossom season and it was stunningly beauitiful. In Washinton, DC it is not quite the same splendor but a delight nonetheless. I felt like spring had truly sprung.

I am a spring baby afterall. I love the season depsite my horrible sneezing attacks. Spring is about renewal and rejuvenation. Its about awakening and looking forward. I love to catch the blossoming of the scenery. It was with that mindset that I walked mile upon mile in DC. I actually walked 29,000 steps in one day.  I felt tired yet awakened by the walk. In Los Angeles you do not get to have such long walks. Shamefully, hardly anyone walks in LA.  People are tied to their cars and to the traffic schedule and flow. Many time all their activities by when and where there will be less traffic. I am not too sure that is a way to live. I’m still mulling that over, especially since I just got another job offer that would bring me back east.   But truly, I don’t believe I can make yet another cross-country move this soon. In five years, yes.

I love walking. I love that I could walk 29,000 steps in one day. My fitbit would love me living out east. While for now my fitbit tolerates my west coast living.   But I cannot change up my life for my fitbit.   Although, honestly, the fitbit steps are a proxy for how much freedom I have to walk.

I tell you what. After DC, I went up to Boston.  Lo and behold, it was snowing when I landed and dipped into a grand high of 35 degrees. Where was spring again? Not in Boston, that’s for sure.  I could barely stand up straight up against the wind and snow that was hitting my face.  While one can walk everywhere here as well, I could barely stand tall in this slush. I slipped a few times here and there.

Somewhere over the rainbow I will find my paradise where I an walk 29,000 steps in a day and be warm and happy.   I am not asking for too much, right?

  1. Usually I would say I’d instantly do a trade so I could go somewhere like the west coast in America rather than the dreary cold UK, but I’m not liking the sound of iciness! I would also like somewhere with 12 months of sunshine and warmth..!

  2. I came to Los Angeles in February of 1988 for a two week stay… I haven’t left! 😎👍 The night I left the Great Lakes area to come to Los Angeles was one of the coldest blizzards on record. I have only seen snow once since then and I don’t miss it one bit!😜 I walk everywhere in Los Angeles and once you get to know the bus systems and the trains and the subways, you will easily get your steps up to 5,000 every day. I estimate that I walk close to a mile everyday or more. That doesn’t include the running around on the construction sites 😲 If you have the time, jump on the Expo line and explore the fabric district downtown. From there, you can jump any bus going to Chinatown for DimSum. Then, it’s a short walk to Union Station where you can take the subway to Koreatown or Universal Studios. If you have a Tap Card, you will only pay $7 for unlimited access to the MTA for the day. Disneyland is only two busses away from Culver City. Make a day of exploration, enjoy the city and get some exercise all at the same time! ❤👍 Have fun! 😊

  3. I also love to walk! If I had all the time in the world, I think I would be walking all day. 🙂 🙌🏻 It is such a shame that certain places don’t allow people to walk as much. I’d hate to be stuck in traffic all the time. I like to walk wherever I can.
